NCAA eligibility basics: what you need to qualify
Updated June 13, 2026
To compete in NCAA Division I or II, you register with the NCAA Eligibility Center, complete 16 approved core courses with the required minimum GPA, and get certified as an amateur. Division III and the NAIA don't use the NCAA Eligibility Center — D3 eligibility is handled by the college, and the NAIA uses its own center (PlayNAIA). Rules change, so always confirm at eligibilitycenter.org.
Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center
If you're aiming for Division I or II, create a Certification Account at eligibilitycenter.org. Division III recruits don't need certification — they can use the free Profile Page instead. Register early (sophomore/junior year) and have your school send transcripts.
Core courses and GPA
D1 and D2 require 16 NCAA-approved core courses with a minimum core-course GPA (commonly cited as around 2.3 for D1 and 2.2 for D2 — confirm the current threshold at the Eligibility Center, since requirements change).
Note: the NCAA no longer requires SAT or ACT scores for initial eligibility. Your core-course record is what matters most.
Amateurism certification
You'll complete an amateurism certification confirming you meet NCAA amateur-status rules. Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) activity is permitted within the rules and doesn't by itself end your amateur status — but follow your state's and the NCAA's current NIL guidelines.
How the divisions and associations differ
- •D1 / D2: NCAA Eligibility Center registration + 16 core courses + amateurism certification.
- •D3: no NCAA Eligibility Center certification — eligibility is set by the college, driven by admissions and aid.
- •NAIA: a separate process through PlayNAIA, with its own requirements.
- •Junior college (NJCAA): separate eligibility rules — check the NJCAA directly.
