How to make a recruiting highlight video that gets coaches' attention
Updated June 13, 2026
Keep it short — about 3–5 minutes — and lead with your best plays in the first 30 seconds. Clearly mark which player you are, show more than just scoring, add a title card with your key info, and host it on YouTube so it's easy to link in coach emails.
Length and order
Aim for 3–5 minutes and put your strongest 3–5 clips first — coaches decide quickly, and many won't watch past the opening. Lead with your best, not your earliest.
Make yourself easy to spot
Don't make a coach hunt for you. Use a brief circle, arrow, or freeze-frame at the start of each clip, or clearly note your jersey number and color. If a coach can't tell which player you are, the clip is wasted.
Show your whole game, not just scoring
Include the skills that matter for your position — defense, passing and decision-making, footwork, effort plays — not only highlights of you scoring. Coaches want to see how you actually play, including the unglamorous parts.
Title card and technical basics
- •Open with a title card: name, grad year, position, height/weight, GPA, contact info, and high school/club.
- •Use clear, stable footage; skip heavy music and flashy effects that distract from the play.
- •Keep full game film available too — a highlight reel gets you noticed; game film gets you evaluated.
Where to host it
YouTube is ideal — public or unlisted, and easy to paste into a coach email. Update the video each season as your game grows, and keep the link consistent so it's easy to share.
